TOWN OF FRANKLIN, MA

The Town of Franklin is one of the fastest growing communities in New England.  Des Lauriers has provided the town with on-going GIS and software services for several years.   Des Lauriers provided GIS based systems to the town that are now being used to steam line daily tasks.  The systems have also aided in the town’s efforts to manage its explosive growth.

The original GIS parcel base for the town was digitized without geographic control.   Des Lauriers was contracted to improve the accuracy of the base map through our experience in surveying and mapping.

Des Lauriers was also contracted to resolve discrepancies between assessor records and the GIS base layer.   Among some 12,000 parcels, less than 10 records remain in question.

Currently, Des Lauriers has been retained by the town to provide routine updates of the GIS layers of the town’s maps.   Parcel layer updates are performed through the use of coordinate geometry to ensure the highest level of accuracy possible.  Parcels without geographic control are adjusted to parcels mapped by coordinate geometry in order to improve overall accuracy.

Des Lauriers also recently completed a unique parcel-based build-out analysis for the town.  Using available data on development status, lot dimensions, zoning restrictions and environmental constraints, a realistic parcel level estimate of the number of lots that are available for development was provided.  Different models were also employed to provide examples of how restrictive regulations could effect the total number of potential new lots.
