TOWN OF SWANSEA, MA

Des Lauriers was contracted by the Town of Swansea to convert the town’s eighty-seven tax maps from analog to digital GIS format.  The project involved scanning and tracing the original tax map images as well as incorporate several years of sub-division and Approval Not Required (ANR) changes to the tax maps.

MassGIS’s orthophoto was used for individual tax map rectification.  All features in the tax maps, including all line works and texts as well as fire hydrant locations shown on the maps were digitized to provide a seamless town wide map.  Using AutoCAD’s paper space, individual updated tax maps were reproduced from the town wide map to reduce multiple editing work required for future maintenance.

In conjunction with the conversion of tax maps, a Street Centerline with appropriate attributes for street geocoding was created for future routing purposes.  All Street Centerline segments were drawn manually with the “from” and “to” points of the segments corresponding to the low to high address of the street.  The high level of accuracy for the street centerline was achieved by using the rectified town wide seamless map and MassGIS’s orthophoto.
